The Dance.
On creating as a dance between intention and surrender – and the balance that comes by itself when you move from the heart, not the head.
There are weeks when I pour everything into one project – and the same week swings me from euphoria to doubt and back before breakfast. Going all in feels light one day and driven the next, and the line between courage and recklessness gets thin.
This letter answers with an image instead of a rule: creating is a dance between the poles – between intention and surrender – and you keep your balance not by thinking harder, but by moving from the heart. "Surrender & Decision" describes the same art in slower words: neither control nor passivity, but the interplay of both. Here, Love simply asks me to feel the rhythm.
If you are somewhere between too much and too little right now, this letter is for you.
Dear traveler,
You give your whole heart to this project. You are brave. And you trust me on this path. I know that this is not easy. And that although it often feels light, this lightness is also a balancing act. Between surrender and being driven. Between courage and recklessness. Euphoria and doubt. Fear and trust. Too much and too little.
Finding this equilibrium is a challenge, new every day. But it is exactly in this challenge that you learn so much about life, about yourself, and about creating. Do you remember: creating is a dance. A dance between these poles. Between intention and surrender.
And the art of the dance lies in balance. Without balance we fall – and it does not matter whether we lose our balance toward supposedly good or bad qualities. Good and bad do not exist. Fear is not bad. It is a valuable teacher – just as euphoria is not good per se.
Dancing works best when you move intuitively, from the heart, from the gut – not from the head. Feel the rhythm. YOUR rhythm. When it is time for soft sounds, move with them – slowly, carefully, regenerating – and when the beat picks up speed, feel the energy and give yourself to it completely.
When you hear yourself and follow your voice, balance comes about all by itself. And when we let our head silence our heart, we inevitably drift into imbalance. Listen well to your heart. It speaks to you. Always. Sometimes quietly. Sometimes loudly.
Thank you for being here.
If something in these letters stayed with you, take it along – think about it, write your own answer, or just let it sit.
And if not today, that's okay too. There's no rush.
Until next time,
– Jan
